STORYLINE:
Shivering commuters in sweaters, fleeces, scarves and jackets: where else could it be but… Bangkok?
The tropical Thai capital is going through an unusually cool run of weather, which forecasters say could last until mid-February.
For the past few days, temperatures have fallen as low as 15 degree Celsius (59 degree Fahrenheit): positively polar in this usually sweltering city.
“It’s really nice and cold so it’s a good thing to get up early so if you catch the day early you can really get 20 degrees, 19 degrees at the moment so it’s great for running,” said foreign resident Thomas Singenberger.
“As long as I have been here it’s never been this cold. I think it was almost 15 or 17 the other day, right? And I have never experienced that, so it’s great,” said Ann-Marie Goverde, who’s lived in Bangkok for 16 years.
Thursday saw a slight rise in temperatures but earlier in the week residents had to dig out their winter clothes.
The Meteorological Department said the cool will likely stay until mid-February, especially in the north and the northeast of the country, and the summer this year would not be as hot.
Wearing a thick denim shirt over a T-shirt, Bangkok food vendor Ekkarak Kamtan said he didn’t care very much for the weather.
“I’ve never known it like this. The hot weather is better” he said with a laugh, while bracing himself against the chill.
January is always one of the coolest months in Thailand. What’s bringing current temperatures down to below the average is a strong cold front from China.
The La Nina weather phenomenon is also at play. This describes an irregular rising of unusually cold water in a key part of the central equatorial Pacific that changes weather patterns worldwide.
As well as an increase in sweaters, the cool spell is bringing a rise in levels or air pollution, so along with their warm clothing, many people also donned masks.
