STORYLINE:
An Israeli strike hit a group of people in the central Gaza Strip city of Deir al-Balah Wednesday, killing at least three people, hospital officials said.

The dead included a father and his child and another child, according to the al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital which received the casualties.

An Associated Press journalist saw the bodies at the hospital’s morgue.

The strike came as officials said they were closer than ever to reaching an agreement to pause the Israel-Hamas war and release hostages held in the Gaza Strip.

But even if a deal is reached, the torment experienced by families of the hostages and war-weary Palestinians in Gaza could be far from over.

Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza began on Oct. 7, 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and killed about 1,200 people and abducted around 250.

A third of the 100 hostages still held in Gaza are believed to be dead.

The war has killed more than 46,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

It does not distinguish between fighters and civilians, but says women and children make up more than half the fatalities.

Israel’s offensive has reduced large areas of the strip to rubble and displaced around 90% of the population of 2.3 million, leaving many at risk of famine.
