STORYLINE:
More than a hundred couples got married at a mass wedding organised by the Pakistan Hindu Council in Karachi on Sunday.

“Every year 125 couples get married. We provide transport to those living far away. We provide the necessary household items to every couple,” siad Mukesh Kumar, the Head of the Pakistan Hindu Council.

1,625 couples had been married in the previous 17 programmes of the event, added Kumar.

Some of the couples saw the event as an opportunity to bypass the cost of getting married.

“My income is very little. I couldn’t have borne the expenses of the wedding on my own,” said recently-wedded groom Mukesh Kumar.

"That’s why we are here at this mass wedding programme. We want to live happily," he added.

1.9% of Pakistan’s population are Hindus, with Hinduism being Pakistan’s second-largest religion behind Islam.
