4. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) Yuval Green, 27-year-old medic, reservist:
"For me, actually, my hesitations regarding what should be done started just a few days after October 7th. I think it seemed clear to me that the war and the military operation was not the way to return the hostages. It seemed to me a simple and delusional idea. How do we allow ourselves to bombard Gaza and kill Palestinians in such quantities, this is terrible in itself. But the thing that surprised me, I did not expect Israel to have special mercy for the Palestinians, Israel is not known for such mercy, but I didn’t think that we would endanger the hostages like that, I thought that the war would end in a very simple way, that the deal would be signed very quickly, and very quickly I was deceived."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Yuval Green, 27-year-old medic, reservist:
"Now when Israel is saying that it’s burning down a house, that it is inflicting destruction due to military causes, what it’s really saying… it’s trying just to explain itself. It has absolutely no idea why soldiers in the field are doing things. Soldiers in the field have a lot of freedom, a lot of freedom of (to) act, they can do pretty much whatever they want, and they won’t be accountable. So when my commander told me to burn down a house, he didn’t do it because he believed that this was used for terror or something like that, he did it because he just was apathetic towards the lives of the Palestinians."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Yuval Green, 27-year-old medic, reservist:
"So I’ve seen destruction done to houses all around because of military purposes. We had to shoot towards houses to make sure we’re not entering a death trap, for instance. And things like that felt a lot like they make sense. But when you’re burning down a house, when you’re doing something very severe for absolutely no military reason, then that’s the time when I have to say I’m not willing to participate. "

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Max Kresch, conference organiser:
"Soldiers who served during this war signed a letter saying ”we’re not going to play along with this game anymore. Enough is enough. Enough manipulation, political manipulation of this war. We’re not going to be pawns in a war anymore and we’re raising our voice.’ We’re not calling out… we appreciate soldiers, we appreciate the IDF, we do not appreciate a government who uses the IDF as a chessboard for their political gain. And we see that as something that is both anti-human and anti-Israel."
