4. SOUNDBITE (English) Alex DaSilva, meteorologist at AccuWeather:
"So the Santa Ana winds are basically kind of like a wind event that takes place in Southern California. It’s just essentially due to the fact… due to when we get an area of high pressure usually to kind of build over the Great Basin states. So that’s Nevada and western Utah. And then a usually lower pressure to the south over, you know, usually northern Mexico or southern even, you know, far Southern California. And it’s basically the pressure difference between high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south that causes a northeast wind over Southern California. And then it comes down into the Los Angeles area."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Alex DaSilva, meteorologist at AccuWeather:
"You have these mountains to the north and to the east. And what happens is the winds kind of but up against those mountains, they kind of go over the mountains and then they kind of come crashing down on the other side and accelerate as they do so. So it’s not only those little gaps that we talked about earlier, you know, between the mountains, you know, the winds that don’t go funneling through the gaps can also just kind of come riding up and over, almost kind of like a roller coaster, essentially."

"This is a graphic that goes through Wednesday morning illustrating where we think the strongest winds are going to be in the Los Angeles area. The pink shading area here is 40 to 60 mile per hour wind gusts. And then the darker pink area here just north of downtown. Unfortunately, this is pretty close to where those active fires are going on. This is where we could see 60 to 80 mph wind gusts."

15. SOUNDBITE (English) Alex DaSilva, meteorologist at AccuWeather:
"Some of the fires did get significantly more contained as the winds were able to die down. They were able to get those planes in the air because the winds weren’t as strong and they were able to kind of encircle the fires and get more containment on them. The concern is that over the next couple of days, through midweek at least, you know, the winds are going to be speeding up. And it’s possible that some of these fires can can become out of control once again."
