4. SOUNDBITE (English) Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Danish Foreign Minister:
"There’s an urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza in order to get the hostages out and in order to put an end to the immense suffering of so many innocent civilians. And I really hope that the talks going on in Doha will be concluded in the foreseeable future with a positive outcome that could be a real game changer."
STORYLINE:
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Monday during a joint news conference with his Danish counterpart in Jerusalem that “progress was made” in ceasefire negotiations with Hamas.
U.S. and Arab mediators made significant progress overnight toward brokering a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and the release of scores of hostages held in the Gaza Strip, but a deal hasn’t been reached yet, officials said Monday.
Three officials acknowledged that progress had been made and said the coming days would be critical for ending more than 15 months of fighting that has destabilized the Middle East.
They spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the talks.
"Israel is working with our American friends in order to achieve a hostage deal," Saar said.
Also during the joint news conference, Denmark’s Lars Løkke Rasmussen, speaking about Greenland, said his government agrees "that the Americans have certain concerns about the security situation in the Arctic, which we share."
"We are ready to continue talks with the incoming president in order to ensure, I would say, legitimate American interests," he added.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s desire for Greenland has sparked anxiety in Denmark as well as across Europe.
The United States is a strong ally of 27-nation European Union and the leading member of the NATO alliance, and many Europeans were shocked by the suggestion that an incoming U.S. leader could even consider using force against an ally.
