10. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Jadranka Kuhar, resident of Zagreb:
"I think someone summed it up well – it seems we voted against [the ruling party] HDZ, rather than in favour of Milanovic. In any case, this is a good result, I like it. I think he (Milanovic) is crazy enough to oppose him (Prime Minister Plenkovic) and actually achieve something.”

12. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Mato Sicek, resident of Zagreb
“He should continue to hold office, I have no problem with Milanovic. He has some good qualities, but also some faults.”
Reporter question: “Do you think this will be good for Croatia?”
“Yeah, I was listening to his statement this morning, when he said he would extend a hand of reconciliation, to bury the hatchet (with the government) and to continue doing everything in line with the law. If that happens, that would be great. But hey, maybe he changes his opinion overnight, and starts saying something different tomorrow, I don’t know. You can’t trust him. But what can you do."

15. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Ivan Rimac, political analyst:
“It seems clear that as the campaign went on, Milanovic was gaining more and more voters every day, while HDZ was losing, and became less and less convincing. Milanovic’s result is the best result of any presidential candidate in the history of Croatia’s democracy, from 1991 to today. Not even Franjo Tudjman, during the war, get so many votes."

17. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Ivan Rimac, political analyst:
“I don’t think Milanovic will change his foreign policy (in the second term). So far, he has been largely disconnected from other politicians in the EU and the world. But he might get a bit more aggressive in insisting on things that are within his authority, per constitution.”

STORYLINE:
Croatians reacted with mixed emotions after the opposition-backed President Zoran Milanovic, a critic of the European Union and NATO, overwhelmingly won re-election for another five-year term on Sunday.

Milanovic won 1.1 million votes in a nation of about 3.5 million voters, nearly four times more than the 380,000 won by the conservative challenger Dragan Primorac who was backed by the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party.

Milanovic, 58, is the most popular politician in Croatia, and is sometimes compared to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for his combative style of communication with political opponents.

His triumph also sets the stage for a continued confrontation with Croatia’s powerful Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.

Sparring between the two during Milanović’s first term in office has marked Croatia’s politics in recent years.
