2. President of the National Foundation of Museums Mehdi Qotbi launching the exhibition
3. SOUNDBITE (French) Mehdi Qotbi, president of the National Foundation of Museums:
"Chaibia is in absolute resonance and total agreement with the Cobra movement that left its mark on the 20th century and is still alive because it questions everything linked to classicism, everything which is academic. Chaibia did not know this movement. I would say that she came spontaneously to colors and to painting. She is known as a raw artist, I don’t like the word naive because she was an artist that simply didn’t have any training."

6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdelaziz el-Idrissi, general director of museums run by the National Foundation of Museums:
"Chaibia, with her innate simplicity and spontaneity, was also a poet of zajal (traditional form of Arabic poetry). She composed zajal and wrote poems. This was always a trademark that could be found among those who inherited the Cobra movement or represented this movement because this movement was originally initiated by intellectuals. It is a conscious intellectual movement originally created by poets and creative people."

11. SOUNDBITE (French) Sanae el-Harti, head of communication and patronage at the National Foundation of Museums:
"This exhibition is an invitation to discover the various affinities between the work of the Moroccan artist Chaibia Tallal and the Cobra movement that was characterized by some kind of Impressionism, some kind of spontaneity. This is what we also discover in the work of Chaibia Tallal. Today, there is an invitation to discover a new angle for the artistic impression of Chaibia Tallal."

STORYLINE:
The artwork of renowned Moroccan artist Chaibia Tallal colored the walls of the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts in Rabat.

Chaibia’s work often draws comparisons with that of the Cobra art movement, which revolutionized the European art scene between 1948 and 1951.

The exhibition in Rabat highlights the connection between the two worlds of art, Chaibia’s and that of the Cobra movement.

Chaibia is known for her brightly, colored and stylized paintings of women.

She was born in the small village of Chtouka in 1929 and was married off at the age of 13.

Her husband who was 70 died two years later, leaving her with a son.

She ultimately moved to Casablanca and started painting in 1963.

President of the National Foundation of Museums Mehdi Qotbi said Chaibia did not have any training as an artist.

"I would say that she came spontaneously to colors and to painting. She is known as a raw artist," he said.

Chaibia’s really took off in 1965 when she met Ceres Franco, who became her favorite gallery owner.
