Following a meeting that went into the early hours of Saturday morning, the Israeli Cabinet approved the terms of a six-week Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal. The Office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the Israeli government had "approved the framework for the return of the hostages." The agreement is set to take effect on Sunday and be implemented in three stages. Phase one would see Israeli troops withdraw from densely populated areas of Gaza. Hamas would release 33 hostages, while Israel would free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Aid agencies are also preparing a relief operation to ease Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. If successful, phase two would oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip following the return of all living hostages, and phase three would involve a lengthy rebuilding process of Gaza’s decimated infrastructure.
