STORYLINE:
People in the streets of Caracas reacted Friday to Nicolás Maduro being sworn in as president of Venezuela for a third consecutive term.

The streets of the capital’s center looked empty, with schools and businesses closing, forecasting possible street protests.

Oneida Perez, 57, one of the few passersby, underscored the emptiness, drawing parallels to the people’s mood.

Maduro was sworn in at the legislative palace, which was heavily guarded by security forces who had become his main hold on power since last summer’s disputed election.

His government has appeared growingly isolated internationally.

The U.S., Canada, the U.K. and the European Union announced a coordinated round of new sanctions Friday on more than 20 officials, accusing them of gutting Venezuela’s democracy.

Former presidential candidate Edmundo González, who also claimed to win the election, announced he would enter Venezuela to contest Maduro’s claim.

After the government announced González would be detained if he or his international allies entered the country, he postponed his plans to do so.

Nelson Perez, 46, said González’ absence and Maduro’s being sworn in again still feels like a "disappointment, despite these being things that were known already."
