STORYLINE:
Hundreds gathered on Friday to say goodbye to Ukrainian marine Andrii Kuzmenko, who was killed in action on January 4 in Donetsk region.
People flocked to St. Michael church in Kyiv, among them Kuzmenko’s pregnant wife, Ukrainian journalist Anastasiia Fedchenko.
She wept by her husband’s coffin, carrying their daughter in the final months of her pregnancy.
"I love him very much and he will live in our daughter, which we both wanted," she said.
"Russia must disappear from the face of the earth because it is simply taking away our best people and taking away our happiness," she added.
As Russia’s invasion approaches a third year the casualty toll among the soldiers amounts to dozens of thousands on both sides.
Fedchenko said it was important to support the Ukrainian army and those who are fighting now.
"I am grateful to everyone for supporting our family, but it is necessary to support the living first, it is necessary to support the donations in order not to support the families of the dead", she stressed.
Andrii Kuzmenko joined Ukrainian Navy Armed Forces in 2023 and was a top performing officer according to his comrades.
"A very painful loss," said the deputy commander of marine battalion "Graphite".

Kuzmenko dreamed about peace and seeing his daughter, his friends and colleagues recalled.
