When these people were coming, while they were on the road there were several airstrikes. Some 13 or 14 hits took place while the march was happening, around the march."

STORYLINE:
Protesters from northeast Syria gathered at the Tishreen Dam to protest ongoing Turkish airstrikes, which they say are devastating vital infrastructure and endangering civilian lives.

The demonstration, meant to showcase unity and demand an end to violence, was overshadowed by heavy bombardments in the area, resulting in casualties and chaos.

Among those at the protest was Berfin Dumar from Kobani, who noted the diversity of the crowd.

The protesters joining the march are from "all the sects and from among everyone who lives in northeast Syria, from Hasaka, Qamishli, Raqqa and Kobani," Dumar said.

The protest occurred under the constant presence of Turkish drones and warplanes, with the airstrikes targeting areas near the march route.

At least five civilians were killed, and 15 others were injured during the attacks.

"Some 13 or 14 hits took place while the march was happening," Dumar said.

Organisers said that more people had planned to join the event, but the bombardments made participation dangerous.

Farhan Haj Issa, co-chair of the Executive Council of the so-called Autonomous Administration in Kobani, addressed the crowd, calling for a halt to hostilities and a return to dialogue to resolve Syria’s more than a decade long crisis.

"We call on the government in Damascus to carry out its duties – not as a party in the Syrian crisis – but as a new administration following the collapse of the Baath rule," Haj Issa said.

He called on the country’s new leadership "to carry out its legal and moral duties to deter this aggression."

In a later interview, Haj Issa condemned Turkey for prolonging the conflict by opening new war frontlines in areas such as Manbij, Kobani, and Tishreen Dam.

Haj Issa urged the international coalition and the Syrian government to fulfil their moral and legal duties to protect the region.

The Tishreen Dam, a critical source of water and electricity for northeast Syria, has become a flashpoint in the escalating conflict.
