RR7727A DJIBOUTI PROBLEMS OF INDEPENDENCE

(9 Jul 1977) In June 1977 Europe’s last colonial possession in Africa gained independence when France handed over the Territory of the Afars and the Issas which became the Republic of Djibouti. The new republic faces many problems: it is poor, lacking in resources (apart from Djibouti port, through which 60% of Ethiopia’s exports pass, and whose rail link has now been cut by Eritrean guerrillas), and its two main tribes divide their allegiance between the two giant neighbours, Ethiopia and Somalia, (both of whom have made territorial claims on the republic). This report looks at the economic and political background to this frail new nation.
