STORYLINE:
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and agreed on strengthening defense and economic ties as China’s threats grow in the region.
The visit, Ishiba’s first for bilateral talks outside of international meetings, shows Japan’s commitment to deepening regional ties ahead of a potential decrease in the U.S. presence after President-elect Donald Trump takes office later this month.
Ishiba is expected to visit Indonesia after Malaysia. Both nations are maritime regional powers located near vital shipping lanes and are considered key to Japan’s economy and security.
They also share concerns over China’s increasing assertiveness, according to officials.
Anwar said that the two leaders agreed on the need to maintain peace and uphold the code of conduct in the South China Sea. Indo-Pacific collaboration and steps to resolve the conflict in Myanmar were also discussed, he added.
Ishiba said he hoped to strengthen security cooperation and increase the resilience of supply chains with Malaysia, which is chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations this year.
