“It is neither professional nor responsible for the Japanese side to make such judgments based solely on the targets and methods of the hacking attacks. We have also noticed that some U.S. allies have recently begun to cooperate with the U.S. in spreading false information about China. We hope all parties can handle cybersecurity issues based on facts, guided by international rules, and with an objective, fair, and professional attitude, rather than playing a supporting role in political farces.”

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday expressed opposition to Japan’s allegation that a Chinese hacking group launched over 200 cyberattacks on Japanese businesses and organizations.

Japan’s National Police Agency’s on Wednesday said its analysis on the targets, methods and infrastructure of the cyberattacks by the hacking group MirrorFace from 2019 to 2024 concluded they were systematic attacks linked to China with an aim of stealing data on Japanese national security and advanced technology.

The targets of the Chinese government-led cyberattacks included Japan’s foreign and defense ministries, the country’s space agency and individuals including politicians, journalists, private companies and think tanks related to advanced technology, the agency said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun refuted the claims at a daily news briefing in Beijing, underscoring China’s commitment to fighting cyber crimes.

Guo claimed that some U.S. allies were following in the footsteps of the United States in engaging in a disinformation campaign against China.

“We hope all parties can handle cybersecurity issues based on facts, guided by international rules, and with an objective, fair, and professional attitude, rather than playing a supporting role in political farces,” he said.

Additionally, Guo noted the importance of party exchange in boosting bilateral relations between China and Japan.

The remarks came days ahead of a visit by a delegation of Japan’s ruling coalition led by Secretary General Hiroshi Moriyama of the Liberal Democratic Party and Secretary General Makoto Nishida of the Komeito Party to China next week.
