Germany’s trains are late, bridges are broken and the military crucially underfunded. With elections coming up in six weeks, how much would any new government have to spend to fix these issues?
In their published election manifestos, all parties suggest tax cuts that would shrink government income overall. While CDU/CSU, FDP and AfD only propose tax cuts, the SPD and Greens propose small tax increases on wealth and inheritance. The parties are split on the constitutionally enshrined debt-brake. CDU/CSU, FDP and AfD want to adhere to the rule, while SPD and Greens have suggested changing the rule and debt-financing infrastructure spending.
