STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said disaster relief works were proceeding in a “timely and orderly” way in the area struck by an earthquake.
A strong tremor shook a high-altitude region of western China and areas of Nepal on Tuesday, killing at least 126 people in Tibet.
The earthquake struck about 75 kilometers (50 miles) from Mount Everest and the border with Nepal.
More than 3,600 houses collapsed, according to a preliminary survey and 30,000 residents were relocated, according to state media.
At the daily news briefing in Beijing, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson also spoke about the Dalai Lama’s plans to lead prayers in memory of the victims.
Guo Jiakun said Beijing remained "highly vigilant about the separatist nature and political motives" of the Tibetan spiritual leader.
The prayer ceremony is scheduled for Thursday and a candlelight vigil is planned for Wednesday night.
Both will take place in Dharamsala, India — home to the Dalai Lama and a large Tibetan population.
Separately, Guo commented on a visa standoff with Brazil.
He restated that China had asked its companies overseas to operate under laws and regulations after Chinese EV maker BYD was accused of bringing hundreds of Chinese workers to Brazil on irregular visas for plant construction.
Without confirming the report, Guo only said the government was willing to work with Brazil to “continuously strengthen…win-win cooperation.”
In late December, Brazilian prosecutors said they had rescued 163 Chinese nationals it said were working in “slavery-like” conditions at a construction site.
