The only thing the regime has left, the only thing it has left is repression, the only thing it has left is to put fear into Venezuelans. And if Venezuelans manage to overcome this fear, there is no repression possible. A few thousand cannot (win) against 30 million Venezuelans. And that is the reality we are facing in these next hours." ++VIDEO CALL++

10. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Maria Corina Machado, opposition leader:
"January 10 is a litmus test for Maduro, for those within the system who want to tie themselves to his destiny and also for the democratic governments that to this day have not made a clear decision because many governments, insisted on the day of the election that they needed to see the tallies, well, they did not see them, they did not see them because the tallies the regime has are the same ones we have, the same ones, all original ones. So the excuse that they are waiting for the tallies is over and the time has come to make a decision. ++VIDEO CALL++

STORYLINE:
Carrying unloaded assault riffles through the streets if Caracas, Venezuela’s government militia rallied on Tuesday to the presidential palace to be sworn in as ‘combatant corps’.

At nightfall, Maduro greeted the troops at the presidential palace and swore them in as ‘combatant corps’, including civilian workers, mostly from the public sector, who carried rifles and who, according to the president, heeded the call to defend the homeland against “the threats against the people of Venezuela”.

“Make no mistake with me”, Maduro said. “We are determined to win, to preserve peace, to preserve national independence.”

During his speech Maduro announced that seven other ‘mercenaries’ were arrested, including two Americans and three Ukrainians.

The next presidential term in Venezuela is set to begin Friday, when the ruling party-controlled congress hosts a swearing-in ceremony for Maduro, despite serious doubts about the validity of last year’s official election results.

Maduro is expected to begin a third six-year term amid demonstrations by his supporters, but it is unclear if anyone among the millions who voted for his main challenger, Edmundo González, will also protest. González, who claimed to have won the July 28 election, left Venezuela for exile in Spain in September after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest.
