“I went out for a ride of ski touring with friends, I was in in the Mont Blanc area, Chamonix, and I brought these friends that they were used to come with me with e-bikes. After half an hour they said, you know, ski touring is not for us, the effort is too much. We just want to enjoy, we just want to get to the Alpine hut, have a nice meal and then get down. So, then on the night back, I was driving, I thought, why not bring in something similar to e-bike to the ski touring? Because this will open up and make more accessible and a fantastic sport because it really gives you the possibility to be immersed in the nature, do a nice workout, not too intense, and then enjoy the thrill of the descent.”

"If I’m a user who wants to do more downhill, my goal would be going higher and higher. So, this this device allows you at the same heartbeat, same energy consumed by your muscle, you can go up to four times higher. If you are instead, let’s say, just wanting to do an easy tour and your goal is just to keep a very low heartbeat, then your goal is maybe to stay out three hours, four hours, right? So there are maybe users who are more concerned about the time, the range. Can I do a tour of four hours, long tour? And people instead, they are more measuring on the meters. So, we are trying to basically cope with both."

STORYLINE:
Gliding across the ice is a piece of cake for Nicola Colombo with his E-SKIMO electric-assisted skis.

The co-founder of Swiss outdoor company E-Outdoor came up with the device after going ski touring with friends who were more accustomed to e-bikes, he then had the idea to bring battery assisted technology to skis.

It’s for uphill climbs and flat-surface traverses, and it’s claimed to be a world first.

“I thought, why not bring in something similar to e-bike to the ski touring? Because this will open up and make more accessible and a fantastic sport,” says Colombo.

“It really gives you the possibility to be immersed in the nature, do a nice workout, not too intense, and then enjoy the thrill of the descent.”

Colombo says there’s lots of tech packed into E-SKIMO to assist a wearer’s stroll, including sensor technology and GPS, meaning it can predict when the next move will come and make it as smooth as possible.

“We have a GPS so we know exactly where each ski is positioned and then it predicts when is the next move to come, so that the step it’s as much as possible as smooth as possible,” he says.

Colombo says the E-SKIMO can allow skiers to do ascents up to four times faster, meaning they then can enjoy the ride down.

It’s for hardcore ski tourers that might want to get higher, and more laid back skiers after an easier experience.

“There are maybe users who are more concerned about the time, the range. Can I do a tour of four hours, long tour. And people instead, they are more measuring on the meters. So, we are trying to basically cope with both,” says Colombo.
