STORYLINE:
In Peru’s capital, three serving police officers dressed up as the Wise Men for a special mission – to deliver presents to children on January 6, to mark the feast of the Epiphany.

Members of Lima’s police force carry out this performance every year and Monday’s was the 37th time officers took on the role of the Magi.

The pilgrimage began very early in downtown Lima.

The route taken by the officers includes several churches, a nursing home, and an orphanage.

The feast day recalls the visit of three Kings or Wise Men – Melchior, Gaspar, and Baltazar – to the baby Jesus.

They arrived laden with presents of gold, frankincense, and myrrh for the Holy Infant.

The officers did not bring such priceless gifts for the children of Lima, but their presents were a hit with the little ones.

Officer Jorge Luis Brenis Panta has impersonated Baltazar for 10 years and says it gives him "immense joy".

His colleague, Carlos Iriarte, proudly assumed the role of Gaspar for the first time.

The feast day marks the 12th day after Christmas and closes the holiday season.
