STORYLINE:
The Washington DC metropolitan area is walloped by winter snowstorm as Congress certifies the 2024 presidential election and prepares former President Jimmy Carter to lie in state later this week.

Snow removal continues on major roadways and around notable DC tourist attractions like the U.S. Capitol, White House, Washington Monument, and the Washington National Cathedral where a state funeral service for former President Carter is set to occur.

Nearby states of Maryland and Virginia are also being hit by the heavy wet snow.

"I’m out here trying to conquer this hill that the snow definitely has locked in," said Virginia resident James Rastatter who was using chains to help his truck climb a snowy hill in a Woodbridge neighborhood.

In Virginia, state police said in a news release they responded to more than 200 crashes between 4 p.m. Sunday and 4 a.m. Monday, although not all were storm related.

Several accidents included injuries, while one was fatal. A 32-year-old man died around midnight in Wakefield, which is south of Richmond, after his truck ran off the road and struck a tree. Police said he was driving too fast for roadway conditions and wasn’t wearing a seat belt, while alcohol appears to be a factor.

Authorities are asking the public not to travel on the roadways unless absolutely necessary in order to allow crews to continue clearing roadways as more snow falls.
