Lovers of vintage and classic cars have been given a rare treat at an annual event celebrating the best in motor design in Beverly Hills.
The 2016 Greystone Mansion Concours d’Elegance is a chance to see prime examples of Roll Royces, Bugattis and cars from a bygone era which are rarely seen in public.
STORY-LINE:
At the 7th Annual Greystone Mansion Concours d’Elegance in Beverly Hills, 136 vintage and classic cars are being proudly shown off by owners from around the world.
All the cars, from 18 classes, were manufactured prior to 1974. The lineup includes classic pre-war European and American models.
It’s a chance to see some of the most impressive vintage cars and motorcycles from a number of eras and manufacturers around the world.
Each year the Concours d’Elegance in Beverly Hills takes place at the famed Greystone Mansion.
Built in 1927, the estate has been the backdrop for endless Hollywood movies and is now on the National Register of Historical Places.
The show is produced yearly by the City of Beverly Hills, with the support of the Friends of Greystone.
John Mirisch, Mayor of Beverly Hills says: "It’s one of those mansions that was built for one of the magnates of the 20’s and we, as a city, have restored it to its original condition so what a wonderful place to have a celebration of antique cars."
The oldest car in the show is the eight horsepower, single cylinder gas engine 1903 Thomas Model 18. Only several hundred were built and today just five remain in the world.
Classic car restorer, Arnold Schmidt, oversees the car for its owners and says people just love the look, all the old brass details and the storage baskets which were in the trunk in those days.
"It was the best car built of the day. Thomas built those. It’ll do 30 miles an hour and it has very special features for that early of a car where it’s got a lubricator on the dash. It’s self lubricating and it’s a total loss oiling system which is unusual for most cars. It throws all the oil out on the ground as you drive, so when you stop somewhere it makes a big mess!"
Notable standouts this year include the pre-war American 1931 Chrysler Imperial CG Dual Cowl Phaeton and four pre-war European cars including: 1935 Bugatti Type 57 Ventoux, 1942 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS "Corsa" and a 1936 Rolls Royce Phantom III Saloon which is the oldest Rolls Royce in the show.
Lauren Cohen and her husband Raffi Cohen own the classic 1936 Rolls that has a Swedish royalty and American socialite history.
"From it being owned original by Swedish royalty and then Barbara Hutton of the Woolworth fortune acquired it and when my husband Raffi actually even tracked it down, just even to get the car was interesting, plus nothing on the car has ever been restored. Everything’s original," she says.
One of the most popular categories is the ‘Grand Touring’ class. Standouts this year include: 1947 Triumph 1800 with rumble seat, 1960 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud Drophead Coupe and 1951 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Convertible.
New categories this year are the ‘Preservation’ class and for the first time a "Cadillac and LaSalle" class which shows the evolution of the two brands.
Ferrari is an all time favourite and this year the highlights a 1961 250 SWB, a 1967 275 GTB, B/4, and a 1962 250 GT SWB Berlinetta.
Porsche also attracts and there are two particular rarities; a 1952 Porsche 356 American Roadster and a one of a kind Porsche 356 A Speedster.
Greystone Mansion Concours d’Elegance took place on May 1st 2016.
