STORYLINE:
Campaign events began on Sunday in Ecuador ahead of legislative elections due in February.
There will be 33 days of campaigning to seek the vote of 13.73 million registered voters in the February 9 ballot.
The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, addressed dozens of supporters who gathered in Quito’s Independence Square.
Noboa is running for re-election and it remained unknown whether he would take an unpaid campaign leave if it would mean Vice President Verónica Abad briefly be in charge of the country.
Noboa and Abad have been facing off in a long spat whose origins are unknown.
Abad’s fate is important for Noboa’s reelection strategy.
He told supporters on Sunday that the election is "a fight against inequality, against the past, it is a fight against drug trafficking, against crime, against indolence. It is a historic struggle."
Luisa González, candidate for the Citizen Revolution movement, also kicked off her political campaign in a speech before dozens of people in a coliseum.
Gonzalez lost to Noboa in the 2023 election.
In case no presidential candidate reaches 50% of the vote and a lead of at least ten points over the runner up, a run-off will be held on April 13.
