STORYLINE:
Thousands of families lined the streets in the Spanish capital on Sunday to watch the Three Kings parade.
The caravan of Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar was led by dancers, giant puppets, the star of Bethlehem and luminous figures, while the three royal chariots distributed buckets of candy.
Spanish children wake up to gifts on their shoes if they have behaved well, and if not, coal will be left.
The tradition recreates the biblical moment in which the star of Bethlehem guided the three wise men from the east to baby Jesus, offering him gold, incense and myrrh as a present.
This tradition is also present in some Latin American countries.
