STORYLINE:

The first parade of Carnival season in New Orleans is scheduled to take place in the French Quarter on Monday, just five days after a terror attack on Bourbon Street, that left 14 victims dead.

On Sunday, a marching band and parade participants were seen rehearsing for the event.

Many had wondered if the 17th annual Joan of Arc Parade would still occur less than a week after the deadly rampage.

But Antoinette de Alteriis, a captain of the Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc, said that not only will they still march through the French Quarter on Monday evening, but that she hopes the parade will bring a message of hope and resiliency to the city as people continue to grapple with the violent tragedy.

“We are here,” de Alteriis said in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday. “We are celebrating life. We are choosing hope and we are choosing joy.”

With eyes from across the country, and even the world, on New Orleans, de Alteriis said there will be enhanced safety measures for the parade, which in years’ past have had more than 800 marchers partake in the event that is a mix of French heritage, feminism and the story of Joan of Arc.

Life Sacco, this year’s Joan of Arc in the parade, is set to don a costume, sit upon a horse and raise a sword.

The weight of this year’s parade is not lost upon the 17-year-old, who said that the patron saint of France “represents what the city needs now” – courage, the capacity to withstand and the power of hope.

“It’s such an emotional time right now for the city of New Orleans, you can see it on everyone’s faces,” she said. “But I feel like the first parade of the year could help lift spirits.”

Toward the entrance of Bourbon Street, off of Canal Street, much more somber scenes played out.

A half-block makeshift memorial continued to expand as people brought fresh bouquets of flowers and candles.

Seven crosses leaned against a wall as people hung beads on them. At the base of the cross were stuffed animals, candles and photos of the victims.
