"This is the Roborock Saros Z70. It’s the world’s first robotic vacuum with a robotic arm, the OmniGrip. We think it’s special because it’s able to recognize objects, pick them up, and place them in the right spot."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Ruben Rodriguez, senior manager, Global PR and Communications, Roborock:
"AI is really important because without artificial intelligence and machine learning, the robotic arm is just a robotic arm. It won’t have any kind of agency of its own. But thanks to machine learning, it’s able to actually recognize objects on the ground, walk around them, pick them up, and know where to go, where to place them."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Ruben Rodriguez, senior manager, Global PR and Communications, Roborock:
"So, robotic vacuum cleaners, believe it or not, are more complicated than drones, even. They operate in spaces that are a lot more cluttered. There’s a lot more obstacles around and therefore they need intelligence in order to be able to recognize objects, recognize the space, pick things up, put them in the right spot. Whereas drones, if you think about it, they’re always controlled by a human. So therefore, AI is truly important for these devices to operate independently."

LEADIN:

What’s claimed to be the world’s first vacuum cleaner with an intelligent robotic arm has been launched.

The Roborock Saros Z70 can identify small objects and move them to their correct location.

STORYLINE:

Bad at putting your dirty socks in the laundry basket? Well, now you don’t need to.

The Roborock Saros Z70 can do the tidying instead.

It’s claimed to be the world’s first mass-produced vacuum cleaner with an intelligent robotic arm.

The machine can identify small objects weighing under 300 grams – like socks, shoes and towels – and put them away.

Users can operate the Z70 via an app, setting parameters for its work – such as where to put dirty socks, or a preferred schedule for vacuuming and mopping.

The robot cleaner is powered by artificial intelligence.

A system of sensors and cameras help it map its environment and recognize objects that might need to be moved.

"AI is really important because without artificial intelligence and machine learning, the robotic arm is just a robotic arm," says Ruben Rodriguez from Roborock.

"It won’t have any kind of agency of its own. But thanks to machine learning, it’s able to actually recognize objects on the ground, walk around them, pick them up, and know where to go and where to place them."

AI also helps it to navigate.

Machine learning has trained it to recognize 108 different obstacles around the home, such as loose cables.

It can avoid these items and clean around them.

"So, robotic vacuum cleaners, believe it or not, are more complicated than drones," says Rodriguez.
