Battling LA wildfires: Nearly 800 incarcerated inmates form backbone of firefighting force | DW News

Multiple wildfires continue to burn out of control across the Los Angeles area. The death toll now stands at ten, but officials warn that number could rise as investigators make their way through affected neighborhoods. More than 1000 buildings have been destroyed, including homes, schools, supermarkets and businesses. President Joe Biden has called the fires the most widespread and devastating in California’s history.
Out of the 7,500 personnel mobilized to combat the wildfires, 783 are incarcerated inmates deployed by California’s department of corrections and rehabilitation (CDCR).
