“The elephants in particular are very interactive with their trunks and can do lots of things with this Christmas tree. But the elephants are also the animals that almost completely devour these Christmas trees. So in the end, when you come back tomorrow, all you see on the ground are the skeletons of Christmas trees.”

“The Christmas trees are fed to many, many species here at the zoo or given to them as an activity material. But for the first time, this year the giraffes have also been given a Christmas tree, which we haven’t tried before. They also went straight to it and were very curious and nibbled on it, poking their noses. And so the animals’ lives get enriched.”

STORYLINE:
For the elephants and others at the Berlin Zoo, it’s finally time to unwrap their Christmas presents.
Trees that didn’t find a home this festive season were given to some of the animals on Friday in what has become an annual event.
Elephants tore off branches with their trunks, moved them around their enclosure and ate the greenery.
Florian Sicks, the zoo’s curator for mammals, said the Christmas trees can also serve as engaging material for the animals.
"The elephants in particular are very interactive with their trunks and can do lots of things with this Christmas tree," he added.
Therefore, it can also "enrich" their lives in ways beyond food.
While the elephants eat most of the donated trees, other animals took a more cautious approach.
This year, the giraffes got the belated stocking-fillers for the first time.
Giraffe Max enjoyed more than a taste of the greenery, but companion Mugambi appeared unconvinced after inspecting it.
