(30 Jun 1974) 7426/A: INDIA’S PROBLEMS
Following droughts in recent years and the additional burden of the oil crisis, India’s economy is under great stress. Inflation is running at 27 per cent a year a record rate, and many foods and basic commodities have doubled in price. The Government, struggling to contain the situation through a system of price- controlled shops, is facing difficulties posed by the operation of a black market. In this background report we talk to the Editor of the Times of India and to the Principal Secretary of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, who assess the present situation and
give their views on the country’s future prospects.
