(22 Jun 1971) RR7125 TRANSKEI: SOUTH AFRICA’S BANTU HOMELAND
The Transkei, most politically advanced of South Africa’s Black homelands, is to have complete independence by 1979. It was granted self-government in 1963, but the majority of its members are appointed by Pretoria, which also controls most of the important ministries. Chief Minister Kaiser Matanzima, in charge since 1963, has supported Pretoria but in recent months he has demanded more power, more money and more jobs for his people. This report looks at what has been done in the Transkei in the last eight years and the prospect for the future.
