STORYLINE:
Hundreds gathered at the observation deck atop the tallest building in Tokyo Wednesday to witness the first sunrise of 2025.
They cheered and exchanged greetings as they viewed the sun rise from the SHIBUYA SKY deck, 229 meters (250 yards) above ground.
The first sun of the new year appeared around 0643 local time (2143GMT) .
Much of Japan shut down ahead of the nation’s biggest holiday, with temples and homes undergoing a thorough New Year cleaning.
