There are now more than seven hundred test-tube babies around the world. The techniques pioneered by the British team of Steptoe and Edwards are now being improved almost daily. But a growing number of ethical questions surround the issues of invitro fertilization, surrogate motherhood, the freezing of embryos, and experimentation on spare embryos. In Britain the Warnock Committee set up to study these questions, has just reported.
