“I was born on the Myanmar side. I was born on a boat, my dad said. Because in the past, a lot of us used to live on a boat. Back then, we were born, raised, and we died on a boat. But later on, like 20-30 years ago, fewer of us were living on a boat. Villagers started to settle on the shore kind of permanently.”

“It’s difficult to build a boat nowadays because they need logs. They need friends and relatives to help. So I think gradually, the knowledge of boat building will soon be gone if there’s no revitalization. And also, there was boundary now between Thai and Myanmar, whereas this was the open sea where people can cross and visit relatives and went to different islands to make a living. So there’s strict regulations for those Moken who became Thai nationals.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Thai) Kriengkrai Pohcharoen, Chief of Surin Islands National Park:
++PARTLY OVERLAID WITH SHOT 8++
“In the part that I’m responsible for, I think about how to improve their quality of life, and how they can sustainably live in nature. Actually, for the Moken community, when there’s tourism, there are people or influence from the outside coming in, their way of life changed. They now have mobile phones and other things. They might not be able to maintain their cultural identity. It’s something that’s challenging, but I see them as people too. They are like Thai people. I want them to have a good quality of life.”

STORYLINE:
Known as sea nomads, the Moken Indigenous people from Thailand and Myanmar used to sail freely among an archipelago of 800 islands off the coasts of the two countries.

They were born, lived, and died on their boats, relying on the sea for sustenance.

But today, strict borders and their limited ability to make boats mean the Moken are struggling to cling to their traditions amid powerful forces of change.

When "Hook" was a child, he started his days by jumping from the boat his family lived on into the ocean.

By age 3, he could already swim and dive in shallow waters.

His home was a kabang—a boat his family sailed in Thailand’s southern waters. The ocean was his backyard.

Now, "Hook," whose full name is Suriyan Klathale, is forced to live on land.

The Moken became known to the world when they saved tourists from the powerful Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, although many of their boats were destroyed and not replaced.

They were the only ones to understand the sea when the tsunami struck in December 2004, killing more than 200,000 people.

Today, this once free-sailing people has been grounded by powerful forces of change.
