1. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Scolforo, Associated Press:
"I’m Mark Scolforo, a reporter with the Associated Press outside the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. This morning, there were two legal proceedings here in the criminal case against Luigi Mangione. He’s accused of shooting to death United Healthcare executive Brian Thompson in New York earlier this month."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Scolforo, Associated Press:
"At the first hearing, Mr. Mangione waived the preliminary hearing. That’s a proceeding at which prosecutors would have had to have shown at least a prima facia case to keep holding him on local charges. And in the second hearing, he waived extradition, clearing the way for him to be returned to New York."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Scolforo, Associated Press:
"New York City police were in the courtroom. There were at least a dozen uniformed officers there along with others. And they immediately took him into custody afterwards. So Mr. Mangione was not returned to the Pennsylvania State prison nearby where he had been held since being arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona last week."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Scolforo, Associated Press:
"The courtroom was was packed and there were some delays as the lawyers, the prosecutor and his defense lawyer discussed the change to the extradition form. Mr. Mangione read the documents there. Part of the deal was that he was, his lawyer was provided with a 20 page police report that otherwise the D.A. said it would have taken a few weeks for him to get and that Mr. Mangione appeared to be reading that another court documents and conferring with his lawyer. Difficult to know what they talked about, but in the end, the both proceedings were waived."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Scolforo, Associated Press:
"He’s being taken to New York where he there could be proceedings in that case later today or possibly Friday. And in the Pennsylvania charges, they did set a court date for February, but it’s unlikely that that will go forward because the New York case is – it’s a murder case and it’s going to take some time."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Scolforo, Associated Press:
"At a news conference after the hearing in the basement, Blair County District Attorney Pete Weeks said that he had not heard recently from federal investigators about any potential federal charges against Mr. Mangione, and he also described how it was in the state’s best interest to agree to give him the investigative document a little earlier than he might otherwise have gotten."
++BLACK FRAMES++
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Scolforo, Associated Press:
"It may be quite some time before he comes back to Blair County because the New York proceedings are going to be lengthy and the Blair County case, the charges aren’t as serious. They involve forgery and giving a false idea to police officers, those sorts of things. So they’re much less serious than what he faces in New York."
