STORYLINE:
French judges plan to deliver hugely anticipated verdicts on Thursday in a historic drugging-and-rape trial that has turned the victim, Gisèle Pelicot, into a feminist hero.

For more than three months, the Southern city of Avignon and its courthouse have been the scene of intense debates, appalling testimonies and women’s rights activism echoing worldwide.

Pelicot, 72, has been seen as the epitome of steely dignity and resilience, waving her anonymity in the trial of dozens of men accused of raping her while she was drugged and rendered unconscious by her now ex-husband.

In all, 50 men, including Dominique Pelicot, faced charges of aggravated rape and attempted rape. Another man was tried for aggravated sexual assault.

The five judges are ruling by secret ballot, with a majority required to convict and also on the sentences of those found guilty.

Local feminist groups held regular protests on the sidelines of the hearings and displayed slogans in the courthouse’s surrounding streets.

They kept up their efforts on Wednesday night, plastering new messages and hanging a banner along Avignon’s medieval walls reading: “Thanks Gisèle."

“I think it has changed society already along these four months," activist Fanny Fourès told the AP.
