“I’d never seen (a fur seal in Rio de Janeiro). I’m a biologist, I work with animals too, so when I heard about it I rushed here to see it. It’s nice, but it’s kind of sad because it looks like it’s in a bad way. My God, he moved a lot!”

“We’re here in Ipanema with the fur seal. It’s common for this species to appear off the coast of Brazil in the middle of winter and spring, but it’s not so common for them to appear at this time of year. But this year we’re seeing a lot of atypical situations. So it’s expected, but not so common at this time of year.”

STORYLINE:
A fur seal appeared on the sands of Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Ipanema beach on Wednesday morning, drawing the attention of locals and tourists.
Fur seals do visit Brazil, but tend to prefer colder waters this time of year.
Isolated by tape and flags set up by lifeguards and firefighters, the seal has become the area’s main attraction.
Biologist Jordana Halpern, had never seen such a specimen before and, when she heard it had been spotted, she rushed to the beach.
“It’s cool, but it’s kind of sad. It seems like it’s not doing very well,” said Halpern.
The animal also drew the attention of researchers, as the mammals are often spotted on Brazil’s coastline in the Southern hemisphere during winter and spring, but rarely seen this time of the year.
“This year we’re having atypical situations,” said Suelen Santiago, an employee at the company Econservation that monitors the beach.
The fur seal appeared to be resting, enjoying the warm sands of one of the world’s most famous beaches, immortalized in the song “Girl from Ipanema.”
