STORYLINE:
Chinese foreign ministry said the renewal of a science and technology agreement between China and the United States is mutually beneficial.
The agreement signed Friday in Beijing after many months of negotiations has a narrower scope and additional safeguards to minimize the risk to national security, reflecting their growing rivalry for technological dominance.
The State Department said it covers only basic research and does not facilitate the development of critical and emerging technologies, including technologies related to artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
"We hope that the U.S. side will work constructively with China to implement the agreement so that the outcomes of US-China science and technology cooperation truly benefit both sides and the world," said Lin Jian, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Washington had come to view the agreement as failing to reflect the shift in U.S.-China relations and China’s emergence as a heavyweight in the field.
The island will receive 38 tanks of this type this year, according to Taiwan meida.
