STORYLINE:
The Chinese foreign ministry said Monday that allegations of a Chinese national being a spy with links to the UK’s Prince Andrew was "groundless hype."
The Chinese national has been barred from the UK because of concerns he poses a threat to national security.
A British immigration tribunal revealed the Chinese national, a 50-year-old Chinese man, had developed such a close relationship with Andrew that he was invited to the prince’s birthday party.
British authorities believe the person was working on behalf of the United Front Work Department, an arm of the Chinese Communist Party that is used to influence foreign entities.
Lin Jian, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Minister, said at a briefing on Monday that “China’s actions have been upright and aboveboard and (China) has never engaged in deception of interference.”
