Syrian refugees at a crossroads | DW News

The downfall of Assad has led to celebrations amongst Syrian refugees in Turkey. We spoke with two of them Saladin and Muhammad. While young Muhammad wants to return home and help rebuild Syria, Saladin is reluctant in view of his homeland’s uncertain future.

More than 3 million Syrians found refuge in neighboring Turkey during the civil war. Some 400,000 have settled in the border city of Gaziantep. According to the Turkish Ministry of the Interior, up to 1,000 returnees are currently registering each day at the Öncüpinar checkpoint near Gaziantep. For Syrians who chose to go back, there is no Plan B. They know that if they leave Turkey, it’s unlikely that they’ll be allowed to return.
