8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Silvia Heibert, toy hospital volunteer:
“There are many children that have never received a toy or a stuffed animal, and a stuffed animal is always a kindness that a child receives. And they are all pretty. And it’s not about it being used because they leave here just like new and when we deliver them to children the mission that is written here gets fulfilled: “I’m your new friend. I am an experienced doll for I have been played with by another child before. Love me and take care of me because I will do the same for you.” When that kid doesn’t want to play with it any more, it will be delivered, fresh and clean, to another kid because its mission is fulfilled.”

They might not have achieved the worldwide fame of the elves in Santa’s workshop, but a group of retired seamstresses in Caracas are bringing just as much joy to the children of Venezuela.
The women volunteer at a toy hospital which gives each damaged stuffed animal or doll a new lease of life as a child’s precious toy.

Welcome to the ‘Toy Hospital’.
A group of volunteer sewers in Caracas are working to repair toys to bring Christmas cheer to many poor and vulnerable young children.
There are many abandoned toys in homes in Venezuela where 7.7 million people have left their country in search of better living conditions since 2014, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
For the relatives left behind the clothes and toys remind them of their loved ones, and they want to put them to good use, bringing pleasure to other children.
The stuffed animal hospital was created in 2017, dedicated to collecting, restoring and giving away stuffed animals, toys and educational games.
The idea was so well received, more people contributed and the project expanded into the Hospital de los Peluches (The Toy Hospital).
