"For me, this (pilgrimage) is to receive the protection that the Virgin gives me when I come to her house. It fills me with joy and happiness. I‘ve come to thank her for one more day, one more year of life, and because my family is complete."

STORYLINE:
Thousands of people gathered at Mexico City’s Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe Thursday to honor the virgin on the 493nd anniversary of her apparition in 1531.
This year, the festivities brought great expectation after the leadership of the Mexican Catholic Church urged criminal groups to call a truce during the emblematic celebration in an attempt to contain, if only for one day, the spiral of violence that plagues vast regions of Mexico.
But in the southern state of Guerrero, where various criminal groups operate, the festivities were marred by the murder of a judge who was shot inside his vehicle by gunmen on Wednesday.
Mexico City mayor Clara Brugada said early Thursday on X that 11.5 million faithful have visited the Basilica during the days leading up to the annual celebration of the country’s patroness.
Many walked from distant villages, others rode bicycles or buses to reach the church’s enormous patio, where a sea of tents held pilgrims who slept overnight to greet the virgin in the morning.
The cold temperature, long walks and the wait to enter the church did not discourage the pilgrims, many of whom walked the last mile or so carrying statues or large paintings of the virgin.
According to tradition, in 1531 the dark-skinned virgin appeared to the Indigenous peasant Juan Diego and her image was imprinted on his cloak, which is on display inside the church.
Traditionally, those who have asked for help from the Virgin of Guadalupe with life problems come in a sign of appreciation, sometimes traveling the last stretch to the Basilica barefoot or on their knees.
