5. SOUNDBITE (English) Colleen Long, The Associated Press:
“Of the 1,500 or so people who sentences were commuted, they had been in prison and were released from prison and placed in home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic was particularly bad in prisons because of the circumstances of prisons, their close quarters. And so prisoners were released and placed in home confinement. And these commutations effectively end their sentences. The 39 people who are pardoned today were mostly convicted of drug offenses. They were all nonviolent crimes. And the people who were pardoned have turn their lives around and become what the White House says is their model citizens in their communities.”

STORYLINE:
President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of roughly 1,500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic and pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes.
The White House is saying it’s the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history.
Associated Press White House reporter Colleen Long says of the 1500 or so people who sentences were commuted, they had been in prison and were released from prison and placed in home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic.
The clemency follows a broad pardon for his son Hunter, who was prosecuted for gun and tax crimes.
