STORYLINE:
The Iraqi army brought reinforcement to the Iraqi-Syrian borders at al Qaim gate in Anbar province, following the fall of Bashar Assad’s government.

The army deployed armored vehicles and Humvees along the border, where just a few passengers and trucks were crossing.

"There was conscription for us, and we couldn’t go back. Now, the regime is down, and there is no army, so we are returning to our country," said Yousuf Qassar, a Syrian citizen who is returning home to Syria.

In the Syrian side, the poster of former President Bashar Assad remained, facing those returning home.

Abdulsalam, a Syrian man returning home after nearly two years in Iraq and who declined to give his last name, said that everyone who left Syria through the Albu Kamal gate is allowed to return, but they must settle paperwork and fines in Baghdad.

The Syrian government fell early Sunday in a stunning end to the 50-year rule of the Assad family after a sudden rebel offensive sprinted across government-held territory and entered the capital in 10 days.

Syria’s nearly 14-year civil war killed almost half a million people and displaced half of the country’s pre-war population of 23 million, becoming a proxy battlefield for regional and international powers.
