STORYLINE:
War-weary Palestinians gathered Wednesday at a distribution centre in central Gaza to receive aid.
The UNRWA-run centre was distributing flour and other aid to displaced people in the city of Khan Younis.
It’s one of the few centres distributing aid to thousands of families in the central part of the war-torn enclave.
“I have only had lentils and rice for 12 days. The children have been sleeping hungry,” said Anas Abu Loz, displaced from Gaza City, as he was waiting to receive his share.
He said that flour and other essentials have become expensive and out of reach of almost everyone in Gaza.
“People do not have the ability to buy flour and do not have money,” he said.
Khan Younis resident, Shaima Baraka, was also waiting to get a bag of flour.
She said her family hasn’t eaten bread for over a week.
“For 10 days, my children have been without flour or bread,” she said.
Israel’s offensive in Gaza, launched after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, has destroyed vast areas of the besieged territory and displaced around 90% of its population of 2.3 million.
Many families have been displaced multiple times and are now crammed into squalid tent camps with little in the way of food or other essentials.
Most of the population relies on international aid.
