STORYLINE:
Police in riot gear looked on as thousands of people gathered at Place de la Republique in Paris Sunday after polling projections showed a leftist coalition won the most seats in the second round of France’s election.
The surprise projections put President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance in second and the far right in third.
Final results are not expected until late Sunday or early Monday in the highly volatile snap election.
According to the projections, the deeply unpopular president lost control of parliament. T
he far right drastically increased the number of seats it holds in parliament but fell far short of expectations.
