"I was coming out of my study group and I saw that the sky was just red. I’m not used to seeing that because in Chicago we don’t really have fires. So I was a little taken aback by it. I was with my friends and we were like, ‘let’s just go back to our dorm, grab our stuff and come back to the library because it’s a shelter-in-place. If all those fails, we can always just come back to our dorms’. And it seemed like it was the best decision because we ended up sheltering-in-place there for several hours. And you just saw the flames coming up over the hill. And at first it was not a problem because they were like, ‘the wind is going parallel and not our direction.’ And I think about maybe five minutes later, they were like, ‘it’s in our direction.’"

"So we were all just staying calm. Our RD’s (campus resident director) and RA’s (campus resident advisor) all had it under control and we were all just banding together. Meeting new people, too. So it was a good experience."

"Then all of a sudden we look back out there after we think it’s being contained and the smoke is like tripled in size. And it looks, you can start seeing like the actual flames in the canyon, like coming onto campus. And so that’s when we were told to evacuate our residents."

STORYLINE:
Pepperdine University students sheltered in place Monday night as a wind-driven wildfire in Malibu blazed near campus.
About 3,000 students sheltered in place, a few in a library while others, some wearing pajamas, gathered outside on a sports field as fire lit up the sky Monday night.
As the sun came up Tuesday, heavy smoke billowed over the Pepperdine campus and the adjacent mountains that plunge toward the coast.
A shelter-in-place order was lifted but the school canceled classes and finals for Tuesday.
Thousands of Southern California residents were under evacuation orders and warnings Tuesday as firefighters battled the wildfire.
It was not immediately known how the blaze started.
