"People come in to the fair and they either stay way too long or they leave immediately and are very upset. Both are great reactions. Both are responses to art and being confronted with challenging ideas or concepts or provocative things, which is where we think art really has that vibration, that vibrancy, that sense of expression that we all crave."

"I always love Satellite (Art Show) because you never know what you’re going to walk into, right? It’s super quirky. It’s super fun. It’s super crazy. But it’s accessible. It is accessible for the community. It’s accessible for the artists. The big fairs are hard to get into. And if you don’t have gallery representation, you’re not getting in. And even if you do have gallery representation, it’s so expensive that you might only get one piece in. But with an artist-backed, artist-run show, you could do anything."

STORYLINE:
Miami: the stage for the annual Art Basel fair, where collectors from around the world drop millions of dollars on art works.

But outside that exclusive atmosphere, a group of artists have hosted something a little more edgy.
Appropriately named Satellite, this fringe event intends to provoke and entertain – like John O’Donnell’s chicken-inspired performance art.
The point is to push some boundaries.

"Satellite (Art Show) really is about expression without filter. That’s our main theme. We do not like having the filter. We want people to engage with raw artistic expression. That is like the binding glue for everything that we do,” explains Brian Andrew Whitely, a visual artist and the founder of Satellite Art Show.

Licking ice creams in the dark. This immersive exhibit simulates a restroom stall of a gay nightclub, with visitors fed the dessert through a hole.

The subject matter is certainly provocative, and not everyone will like it. But that’s a good thing, according to Whitely.

"People come in to the fair and they either stay way too long or they leave immediately and are very upset. Both are great reactions. Both are responses to art and being confronted with challenging ideas or concepts or provocative things, which is where we think art really has that vibration, that vibrancy, that sense of expression that we all crave," he says.

Satellite Art Show is now in its tenth year.
