8. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry:
“We have stated our solemn position on relevant U.S. actions. The U.S. has used Hong Kong-related issues to impose indiscriminate visa restrictions on Chinese officials, grossly interfered in China’s internal affairs and seriously violated the principles of international laws and basic norms of international relations. In accordance with the Foreign Relations Law of the People’s Republic of China and the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law of the People’s Republic of China, China has decided to impose visa restrictions on US personnel who have acted egregiously regarding Hong Kong-related issues.”

STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday said issues involving Taiwan were its internal affairs after deploying ships and planes around the self-governing island.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday that it had detected a dozen Chinese naval ships and 47 military planes in the past 24 hours but no live-fire activity as in previous military drills.
Taiwan’s military has been bracing for possible exercises by China in response to a recent overseas trip by Taiwan’s president that included Hawaii and Guam, an American territory.
Without any Chinese announcement, Taiwan officials are calling it training, said Taiwanese Lt. Gen. Hsieh Jih-sheng, while noting that training can become drills, and drills can become war.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning neither confirmed nor denied it when asked whether the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was conducting drills.
Mao also criticized the Philippines over tensions in the South China Sea.
