STORYLINE:
A dozen activists plastered messages on Sunday in support of Gisèle Pélicot whose husband is on trial for allegedly recruiting men to join him in drugging and raping her.
"Justice for Gisèle, justice for all" read one of the messages in Avignon, a city in southeastern France.
Two weeks ago, prosecutors laid out the verdicts and punishments they want for dozens of men accused of raping Gisèle Pélicot while she was rendered unconscious by her husband.
Pélicot’s courage during the harrowing proceedings has transformed her into an icon beyond France, for campaigners fighting against sexual violence.
Dominique Pelicot, the man that 71-year-old Gisèle Pelicot was married to for nearly 50 years, admitted that he mixed sedatives into her food and drink so he could rape her and also invited dozens of strangers that he recruited online to also rape her.
Most of the defendants contested the accusation of “rape”.
Some have claimed they believed a husband’s consent for sexual intercourse was sufficient, others said they were tricked by Dominique Pélicot to believe his wife was consenting.
