“You know that I myself belong to a group of foreign ministers which at the beginning of summer demanded a change in the Syria policy of the European Union. What is happening now encourages us in our demands. We need a realistic and pragmatic discussion on Syria without ideological blinders. And I expect a discussion at the next council of the EU foreign ministers next Monday. Syria needs to be on the agenda. And of course this is also about establishing new perspectives for the civilian population there and to enable the possibility for refugees to return.”

7. SOUNDBITE (German) Alexander Schallenberg, Austrian Foreign Minister:
“It is important to first establish facts, to put asylum and family reunion procedures on hold. We need to wait until the dust settles, so we can see what is happening, what the next points are, where can we dock? The situation on the ground is still very convoluted, very complex. That is nothing new unfortunately when it comes to Syria.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexander Schallenberg, Austrian Foreign Minister:
“(President Milorad) Dodik has to know, the Republika Srbska – the future has to be in Bosnia-Herzegovina and that the EU perspective is the only perspective in town. You can try to sell yourself to any other power, but in the end – and as my friend stated out – we are, the European Union is the economic neighbour and partner. We are the financial partner and neighbour. We are the human and cultural partner and neighbour. So I would suggest everybody stop looking to Moscow or Beijing or other places on this planet.”

“You have to acknowledge, that sanctions means always that you have reached so to say the end of the diplomatic alphabet. And I would like not to get to this point as far as a candidate country is concerned – if avoidable.”

STORYLINE:
Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said it was important to wait “for the dust to settle” in Syria.
The comments were made following a meeting with Bosnian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic.
Schallenberg said he hoped to discuss Syria at the next meeting of the EU foreign ministers and to look for ways to “enable the possibility for refugees to return.”
Speaking on the EU accession of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Schallenberg said that the EU perspective was “the only perspective in town.”
Milorad Dodik, the leader of Serb-run part of Bosnia-Herzegovina, has been trying to torpedo the accession process and is instead looking to Russia.
Schallenberg said: “stop looking to Moscow or Beijing or other places on this planet.”
